Two recreational boats seized in Isla Cristina (Huelva) with 2,000 kilos of hashish hidden in double bottoms

Joint operation of the Tax Agency and the Civil Guard

  • The skippers of both boats, who were pretending to be sport fishing, arrested

28 July 2022.- Customs Surveillance Officers from the Tax Agency in Huelva together with Civil Guards from OCON-SUR Citizen Security have seized two recreational boats in Isla Cristina (Huelva) that were concealing almost two tonnes of hashish in double bottoms. In the same operation, two persons who skippered the sport boats and simulated the activity of sport fishing were arrested.

The control established by the Tax Agency and the Guardia Civil on drug trafficking using the maritime route led to the suspicion that the real activity of the boats was quite different. For this reason, the corresponding operation was set up and the vessels were taken to port to be anchored.

Double bottoms

The search in port revealed the existence of double bottoms on both vessels, in which 1,959 kilos of hashish were discovered in packages of different sizes and shapes, adapted for transport in hidden spaces.

These double bottoms are built by altering the structure of the ship;by opening access openings that are concealed by existing or purpose-built fixed elements.

The result of the searches led, in turn, to the arrest of the two crew members, who are charged with an offence against public health, and to the seizure of the two boats and an all-terrain vehicle with which they were going to take them out of the water.

The detainees, along with the seized merchandise, boats, vehicle and other effects, have been handed over to the judicial authorities.
