  • This is the largest national seizure of containerised cigarettes so far this year.
  • One person under investigation in Spain

19 of August 2022.- Officials from the Customs Surveillance of the Tax Agency, in a joint operation with the National Police, have seized, in the port of Algeciras, more than 10.3 million tobacco cigarettes in a container coming from India and have taken a statement, as a non-detained person under investigation, from one of the persons responsible for the company that appeared in the maritime documentation.

Investigation teams detected a shipment from India, which declared "bed sheets and other bed linen";However, its parameters did not seem to correspond to what was stated. This raised the suspicions of investigators who have been working for months to detect illicit trafficking and the use of instrumental companies, so a joint operation was set up to inspect the container.

On opening the equipment, it was confirmed that the goods transported were 1,032 cartons of tobacco cigarettes, whose market value would amount to more than 2,100,000 euros, and they were seized and subsequently one of the managers of the company used in the maritime shipment was taken into custody as a non-detained person under investigation.

This operation has resulted in the largest seizure so far this year in Spain of cigarettes transported in containers.

The actions carried out, together with the effects and goods seized, have been handed over to the competent judicial authority in Algeciras for investigation.

Members of the Customs Surveillance Operational Unit of Malaga and Group II of the UDYCO of the Local Police Station of La Línea de la Concepción have participated in the investigations, and are continuing with their efforts to find out and locate those responsible for the illegal shipment.
