National Identity Document (DNI)
The National Identity Document (DNI), issued by the Police General Directorate (Ministry of the Interior), is the document that accredits the identity, personal details and Spanish nationality of its holder.
In 2006, the electronic National Identity Card (DNIe) was created, made of polycarbonate with the affiliation data engraved in the body of the card and incorporating a small integrated circuit (chip), capable of securely storing information and processing it internally. The technological advances on the chip allow the citizen to connect with the Administration in a digital way, make use of his/her electronic identity, and digitally remotely sign documents. To do this, the citizen must have a hardware device that allows the certificates contained on the chip to be read, facilitates connection to the various digital services, and enables the different drivers necessary for the operation of the hardware to be installed.
For more information, consult the information on electronic DNIs available on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Police and Guardia Civil General Directorate).
