More than 600 kilos of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas seized in the port of Malaga

Joint operation by the Tax Agency and the National Police

  • The detailed analysis of the so-called 'hot routes' of drugs led to the detection of a container from South America

February 27, 2023.- Customs Surveillance Officials of the Tax Agency, in a joint operation with the National Police, have seized more than 600 kilograms of cocaine in Malaga camouflaged among bananas from a shipment coming from South America.

Research groups have been working for months on the detailed study of what are known as 'hot routes'; that is, those areas that would presumably be used by criminal organizations to introduce narcotic substances in containers. At the beginning of this month, the comparative analysis of different shipments and incidents in the distribution chain raised investigators' suspicions about a container, so a joint device was established to proceed with its inspection.

Upon opening the equipment, it was confirmed that, among the legal merchandise transported, more than 600 kilos of cocaine were hidden inside, whose market value would exceed 21 million euros, and it was seized.

This action represents a significant blow to international organizations dedicated to the international transportation of cocaine that operate in our country taking advantage of international merchandise trade operations, and that introduce large quantities of narcotic substance at origin and extract it at destination taking advantage of the existing commercial structure.

The actions carried out, together with the effects and merchandise seized, have been made available to the Investigating Court acting as incident guard in Malaga.
