The Tax Agency has already refunded 5.3 billion euros to more than 8,100,000 taxpayers
2018 Income Tax Campaign
- With three weeks to go until the end of the campaign, 14 million returns have been filed, one million more than last year, and the amount returned has grown by 7%

- Montero has detailed that more than 734,000 mothers and fathers have received a total of 960 million euros so far in the return of personal income tax linked to the maternity and paternity leave they enjoyed between 2014 and 2017.
June 11, 2019 .- More than 8,158,000 taxpayers have already received their Personal Income Tax (IRPF) refunds for 2018, 6.6% more than last year at the same time. The amount returned amounts to 5.296 billion euros, an increase of 7.2%. 77% of the refunds requested so far and 67.5% of the corresponding amounts have been paid.
As has been the case throughout the campaign, this acceleration of payments corresponds to an acceleration of submissions. As of yesterday, and with three weeks to go until the end of the campaign, 14,039,000 tax returns have been filed, 1,090,000 more than last year at the same time.
This acceleration affects both the submission of tax returns with a refundable result (10,578,000, +7.9%) and those with a payment to be made (2,953,000, +9.5%), in a context of anticipation of assistance services, improvements in 'RENTA WEB' and the positive evolution of two alternative non-face-to-face submission methods to the Agency's website (the mobile application and the 'Le Llamamos' plan for telephone submission of tax returns), which have been given a new boost in this campaign.
Refund of maternity and paternity income tax
The acting Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, today praised the important work carried out by the Tax Agency to guarantee the constitutional precept that establishes a fair tax system inspired by the principles of equality and progressivity. This was stated during a visit to the Income platform of the Special Delegation of the Tax Agency in Madrid, accompanied by the Director General of the Agency, Jesús Gascón.
Montero also detailed the status of personal income tax refunds related to maternity and paternity leave taken between 2014 and 2017. As of yesterday, more than 734,000 mothers and fathers have received their refunds through the process launched by the Government. The sum of the amounts repaid to date (repayment plus interest) exceeds 960 million euros.
Taxpayers entitled to a refund received an average of 1,309 euros. Specifically, mothers received an average of 2,066 euros and fathers 483 euros.
As for the withholdings made in 2018, taxpayers do not need to carry out any procedure, since their Income Tax return for that year, which must be submitted in the current campaign, already includes the benefits as exempt and the withholdings incurred are deductible. In any case, as with any other tax information provided to the taxpayer, the Agency recommends that it be reviewed before filing the return.
As regards benefits received by civil servants and social security mutualists, the verification of the data provided by payers is being completed this week and repayments are expected to begin next week, although it is not ruled out that they may begin this week.
Attention in offices and non-face-to-face channels
In the current campaign, 20,350,000 declarations are expected to be submitted, 361,000 more than the previous year. Of this total, it is expected that 14,314,000 will be eligible for a refund for an estimated amount of 10,468 million euros, 4.5% more, while nearly 5,161,000 will result in a refund of 10,160 million euros.
Since May 14 and until the last day of the campaign, July 1, the Tax Agency has made its offices available to taxpayers in addition to non-face-to-face channels (the AEAT website, the app and the "Le Llamamos" plan), which prevent taxpayers from having to go to assistance platforms.
A significant part of the increase in presentations recorded to date is due to the growing use of both the app and the We Call You plan. As for the mobile application, more than 261,000 tax returns have been submitted through this channel until yesterday, 46% more than in the same period of the previous campaign. Of this total, 202,000 are 'one-click' submissions and the rest correspond to cases of taxpayers for whom the application has referred them to the AEAT website to make some modification and who have returned to the 'app' to complete the submission.
At the same time, the number of tax returns made by taxpayers who have arranged an appointment for the Tax Agency's 'Callback Scheme' has also increased. To date, more than 192,000 tax returns have been submitted by telephone (48% more than last year at the same time).
As the 'Callback Scheme' has absorbed the old system of telephone calls, it has allowed for better planning of the telephone service and therefore is faster as a support tool designed as a great alternative to in-person assistance, so that taxpayers who are less well-versed in new technologies have access to a telephone helpline, and can file tax returns and if it is the case, receive their rebates earlier.
Methods of filing the return.
There are various methods of filing the return, depending on whether the result is payment or refund and whether or not payment is by direct debit. Direct debit means that you can file your tax return any day up until June 26, but payment will not be made until July 1, the last day of the Tax Return Campaign. Direct debit does not prevent payment from being split into two instalments (the second on November 5).
