The Tax Agency has returned over 7.4 billion euros to 11.3 million taxpayers since the end of the campaign
2020 Income Tax Campaign
- To date, 79.8% of the rebates have already been paid and 69.6% of the amounts requested have been paid.
- 21,626,000 tax returns have been filed, of which more than 1,153,000 were filed through the telephone filing service (‘We’ll Call You’ plan), which has consolidated its position as the main means of personalised assistance for the Income Tax Campaign.
- The improvement in the health situation compared to last year has meant that 527,000 tax returns were able to be filed at offices – an increase of 65%.
- Recipients of ERTE and IMV benefits were particularly supported during this campaign, with a 41% higher proportion of submissions with personalised assistance than those for all taxpayers.
July 2, 2021 .- The Tax Agency has returned 7,392 million euros to 11,299,000 taxpayers at the end of the 2020 Personal Income Tax (IRPF 2020) campaign, so that, as of yesterday, 79.8% of the refunds requested in number and 69.6% in amount have already been paid thanks to the good pace maintained in the number of refunds paid (+ 1%) and amounts paid (+ 1.4%), compared to the decrease registered in requests (-1.7% in number and -4.8% in amount).
In line with expectations, the Agency received a higher number of returns this year (+3.1%), reaching 21,626,000, of which 14,151,000 (-1.7%) included rebate requests (65% of the total). In turn, 6,021,000 returns had payments owed (+7.8%), although this year those affected by temporary lay-offs (ERTE) with payments owed have had an additional means of facilitating liquidity, with an option to installing payment instalment for six months without interest.
Assistance for people affected by ERTEs and IMVs
The campaign, which has now ended, has seen a reinforcement of personalised assistance (at the taxpayer's request), both by telephone and in offices, which has facilitated the filing of 1,680,000 returns, 14% more than last year, by different types of taxpayers. The main beneficiaries include those affected by ERTEs and IMV recipients.
By the end of the campaign, 3,145,000 tax returns had been submitted through the various channels by ERTE benefit recipients. It should be borne in mind that, from the overall group of recipients, more than half were not obliged to file tax returns.
In turn, with regards to MVIs, the returns filed included more than 308,000 beneficiaries of this aid (a single return may include several beneficiaries), which must be considered alongside all those other beneficiaries who appear in the returns, but not as holders. This mean that the overall figure of MVI beneficiaries for the Income Tax Campaign, once the corresponding debugging has been carried out, will be higher.
Both groups, ERTE and IMV recipients, received special support in the campaign, given that in these groups the proportion of filings made with personalised assistance in offices or through the ‘We’ll Call You’ plan was 41% higher than that corresponding to all taxpayers (3.3 times higher in the case of IMV recipients).
‘We’ll Call You’, the first personalised help line
Once again this year, the Tax Agency designed a reinforced plan for telephone assistance in filing to cover the needs of taxpayers without having to wait for the opening of assistance in offices and, in any case, also to avoid unnecessary journeys, especially taking into account the persistence of certain capacity limitations and security distance requirements derived from the health situation.
As a result, a total of 1,153,000 returns have been filed through ‘We’ll Call You’ since it was launched on 6 May, a figure equivalent to that of a year ago and 4.8 times higher than two years ago, making it once again the first filing method with personalised assistance used by taxpayers.
Office assistance also increased. The improvement in the health situation compared to last year has meant that 527,000 tax returns were able to be filed in person, 65% more than in the previous campaign.
Electronic channels
Nevertheless, the vast majority of taxpayers have continued to file their returns online, although the figures have moderated compared to last year, when the health context particularly encouraged this filing channel.
This year 19,946,000 returns were filed online, 92% of the total, of which 19,534,000 were filed via the Agency's website, 2.1% more than a year ago and 8.9% more than two years ago.
The remaining online returns correspond to the 411,000 returns filed via the Agency's mobile application, 13% more than the previous year. Of this figure, more than 277,500 were ‘one-click’ filings, and the rest referred the taxpayers to the Tax Agency website from the app to make a modification and then returned to the app to finish the process.
This high use of electronic channels by taxpayers has meant that more than 30% of all tax returns for this year's tax year have already been filed prior to the launch of the telephone assistance service.
Easier to file returns
The campaign that has already concluded featured several improvements in RENTA WEB, such as the ease given to the self-employed in modules (objective estimation) to ensure the maximum possible use of the support measures introduced last year in the context of the pandemic and which also had an effect now, on tax returns.
Similarly, improvements were introduced to facilitate tax returns, especially for taxpayers who declare income from economic activities in direct estimation (voluntary automatic transfer of information from the registry books), lessors (automatic determination of depreciations) and investors in general (automatic calculation of capital gains and losses on transactions with listed shares through the 'securities portfolio').
The other new feature this year was the tool introduced to make it easier for taxpayers to avoid recurring errors in tax returns and, with it, the risk of a subsequent regularisation by the administration. Almost 43,000 taxpayers have opted to maintain the initial information in their tax data following a reminder from the Agency that they were modifying certain boxes in the section on income from work which in previous years, and for taxpayers with similar characteristics, had given rise to regularisations.
Wealth Tax
In parallel with the Income Tax Campaign, the Wealth Tax Campaign was also developed, which had to be declared by those taxpayers with a tax liability (after applying the corresponding deductions and allowances), and also those with a tax liability who last year had assets and rights worth more than two million euros. At the end of the campaign, more than 218,000 declarations of assets had been registered and the amount to be paid reached 1,428 million euros.
