1.4 Economic sector
The main activity of each company is obtained from the annual VAT return, from the information on the headings of the annual economic activities tax, and from the main activity assigned in the Census of Large Companies. Based on this information, starting in 2009, the Economic and Tax Results statistics on VAT present a new sectoral classification harmonized with the new National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE 2009):
- 01 Agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing
- 02 Extractive industry, energy and water
- 03 Industry
- 04 Construction and real estate activities
- 05 Trade, repairs and transportation
- 06 Information and communications
- 07 Financial and insurance entities
- 08 Business Services
- 09 Social services
- 10 Other personal and leisure services
- 11 Unrated
In some statistical tables this classification by economic sector is presented with the following grouping:
- Agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing
- Industry: formed by sectors 02 and 03
- Construction and real estate activities
- Trade and communications: formed by sectors 05 and 06
- Financial activities and business services: formed by sectors 07 and 08
- Social services
- Other and unclassified services: formed by sectors 10 and 11
For the 2024 financial year, a broader sectoral classification is being added, breaking down the 11 classification into 32 sectors (NACE32). See Annex I. Sectoral classification.
