Tobacco smuggling distribution network dismantled

November 20, 2023.- Customs Surveillance officials from the Tax Agency and agents from the National Police have dismantled, in their fight against the trafficking of illegal substances, a network for the distribution of contraband cut tobacco.

In the operation carried out last October, two people were arrested for the crime of tobacco smuggling. The investigation is still ongoing and further arrests are not ruled out.

Operation for the location and interception of merchandise

Following investigations carried out by Customs Surveillance officers and National Police agents, an operation was organised to locate and intercept the transport of contraband tobacco in the Seville town of Écija.

It was on the morning of October 26 of this year, when the agents involved in the operation intercepted a rental van that was transporting 260 packages, which in total contained 722 kilos of contraband tobacco.

The seized product lacked the relevant health controls and permits and is worth 115,520 euros on the current market.

The operation culminated in the arrest of two adult males, who were placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities.

The investigation, which has been carried out within the ongoing collaboration between Customs Surveillance and the National Police in the fight against the trafficking of illegal substances in the province of Seville, remains open.
