September 8, 2023.- Customs Surveillance officials from the Tax Agency and agents from the Civil Guard of the Tax and Border Section (UDAIFF) of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in a joint operation, detected in the ADT of the Automated Processing Center of Correos a shipment that contained 2,396 counterfeit commercial emblems of various high-end brands.
Following the seizure, an investigation was carried out into a man, resident in the south of the island of Tenerife, the recipient of the shipment, as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against industrial property.
The emblems were certified as counterfeit, with the average value of the seized goods estimated on the current market, if the usual procedure for original products were used, at 1,569,380 euros.
After the suspect was taken to customs facilities, where the corresponding proceedings were carried out by both bodies, the report was sent to the Court of Instruction on Duty in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Trafficking in such goods poses a threat to consumer protection, health, safety and other public interests. This involves illegal trafficking of various counterfeit goods or goods that violate the approval standards for consumer goods in general.
In recent years, the authorities have paid special attention to these risk sectors, carrying out coordinated and joint operational actions at national and international level and promoted by the World Customs Organization, OLAF (European Commission Anti-Fraud Office) and EUROPOL, among others.
