Two arrested for trying to introduce nearly 8.5 kilos of cocaine through Santander airport

  • The drugs were found inside a suitcase, hidden in food packages.

March 6, 2024.- Customs Surveillance officials from the Tax Agency and members of the Civil Guard of Cantabria have arrested a man and a woman, aged 34 and 31, natives of Colombia, as alleged perpetrators of a crime against public health, for drug trafficking, with approximately 8.5 kilos of cocaine being seized at Santander airport.

Investigators from the Customs Surveillance Service and the Civil Guard who act as State Fiscal Security, under the functional dependence of the Regional Customs and Tax Agency. of the Tax Agency, daily carry out, among other actions, inspections of passengers and luggage according to preventive risk criteria.

On March 3, as a result of these controls, a suitcase was detected that had come from Colombia and could not be collected by its owners, having been placed on another flight.

The suitcase aroused suspicion and was inspected the following day by Customs Surveillance and Civil Guard agents, in the presence of the man who came to collect it, and several packages of food products were found inside.

After examining the packages and carrying out tests with reagents to detect whether the substances they contained were narcotics, they returned a positive result for cocaine, proceeding at that very moment to arrest the man, who had gone to collect the suitcase.

After further investigations, it was discovered that the man already arrested had arrived at the airport to pick up his suitcase, accompanied by a woman, who left the airport and was later located and arrested in a hotel in Santander.

Origin of the drug

Investigations showed that the now detained had arrived at Santander airport last Sunday, coming from Bogotá (Colombia), having made a stopover in Madrid.

The suitcase they were carrying from Colombia apparently could not be placed on the same flight from Madrid to Santander as the two people were travelling on, which is why it was relocated on the next flight.

It was also found out that the couple planned to return to Colombia in the coming days.

The detainees were brought before the Santander Court on the morning of 5 March, which ordered their imprisonment.
