May 22, 2025.- Since the end of last year, officers from the Tax Agency's Customs Surveillance Operational Unit in the Balearic Islands and the Civil Guard, through their Fiscal and Border Patrols, have been conducting joint operations throughout the Balearic Islands archipelago, monitoring vehicles with foreign license plates.

These operations involve actions against customs and tax fraud in road transport in the event of potential non-compliance with the Excise Tax Law, the Union Customs Code, its Delegated Regulations, or the VAT Law. This joint operation allows for on-site verification of all information relating to vehicles and their taxpayers, thereby detecting potential violations and/or fraud.

Since the end of December last year, 1,065 vehicle inspections have been carried out, resulting in 166 violations of the Temporary Importation Regime and the Excise Tax Law.

The operation aims to verify that vehicles with foreign license plates are circulating in Spain with all applicable tax and administrative requirements and obligations fulfilled (tax payment, vehicle registration in Spain, proper documentation, insurance, etc.).

Obligation to register in Spain

If a person is a tax resident in Spain or the owner of a business and the vehicle has been circulating in Spanish territory for more than 30 days, it is mandatory to begin the registration process. Fines for this type of violation range from 50% to 150% of the tax due, along with possible immobilization of the vehicle.
