Over 2.3 tonnes of hash seized in Algeciras in a combined operation by the Tax Agency and the Guardia Civil

  • Air, sea and land monitoring has been carried out.
  • After the chase, 71 bales that had been abandoned during the escape of the drug traffickers were recovered.

August 30, 2018 .- A total of 2,332 kilos of hashish have been seized in Algeciras (Cádiz) in a joint operation by the Tax Agency and the Civil Guard, within the framework of the permanent fight that the General State Administration maintains against drug smuggling in Campo de Gibraltar.

Thus, thanks to the close collaboration between the AEAT and the Civil Guard, on August 10th a major blow was dealt to this criminal activity.

The operation began when the Customs Surveillance aerial vehicles of the Tax Agency and the Civil Guard, patrolling the waters of the Strait, detected several semi-rigid vessels, sailing without lights and loaded with a significant number of bales of the type normally used for trafficking hashish and sailing towards the coast in the municipality of Algeciras, where no less than 15 people were waiting with the intention of unloading the illicit merchandise.

The acting forces notified the Permanent Support Centre for Customs Surveillance in Algeciras, as well as the Operational Service Centre of the Civil Guard, to reinforce the operation with the support of maritime and land patrols of both bodies.

Following aerial monitoring, the start of unloading of the bales was confirmed, which prompted the rapid intervention of the helicopter. Upon noticing the presence of the police and Customs Surveillance personnel, the drug traffickers fled quickly, abandoning the merchandise they were unloading.

Minutes later, Civil Guard officers arrived in the area and, together with Customs Surveillance patrolmen, searched the area and managed to recover a total of 71 bales of hashish, which had been abandoned after the chase, and which weigh 2,332 kilos.

The difficult terrain of the area and the vegetation have prevented the arrest of the drug traffickers, although the operation remains open, with arrests not ruled out, and aerial, maritime and land surveillance has been carried out.
