The Tax Agency returned over 10.20 billion euros to 14 million taxpayers at the end of the year

2018 Income Tax Campaign

97% of the requested refunds and over 94% of the amounts claimed have been paid to taxpayers
In the previous year, a total of 20,695,000 tax returns have been registered, with a strong recovery in the amount of tax returns with payments due as a result of particularly strong growth in capital gains

January 3, 2020 .- The Tax Agency has already returned 10,209 million euros to 14,061,000 taxpayers of the Personal Income Tax corresponding to 2018 (IRPF 2018). This means that, as of 2 January, 97% of the requested refunds have already been made and 94.1% of the requested amounts have been paid.

At year-end, returns increased by 3.9% from the previous campaign, while returned amounts increased by more than 8.8%, in both cases above the growth of the requested returns and their amounts (3.6% and 8.3%, respectively).

The tax returns filed in the previous tax campaign at year end totalled more than 20,695,000, 3.5% more than the previous year, highlighting the recorded increase in the amount of the tax returns resulting in a payment due (+15,5%), which is mainly motivated by a strong increase in wealth gains. At the same time, the number of returns with credit to pay grew by 2.5%.

The most noteworthy feature of this campaign, now completed, includes the consolidation of the two alternative remote filing methods to the Agency's website (the mobile application and the "Le llamamos" (We call you) plan for filing tax returns by phone), which have received a new boost in this campaign. Meanwhile, the traditional in-person service in branches has remained in place, and more than 2.1 million returns have been filed on Income Tax platforms, a very similar figure to that of last year.

As for the mobile application, more than 290,000 declarations have been submitted this way, 45.5% more than in the last campaign. 221,000 of these were 'one-click' filings, and the rest correspond to cases where the taxpayer was referred to the Tax Agency website from the app to make a modification and then returned to the app to finish the process.

At the same time, the number of tax returns made by taxpayers who have arranged an appointment for the Tax Agency's 'Callback Scheme' has also increased. More than 239,000 declarations have been submitted by telephone (33.3% more than last year).

The new boost to these alternative electronic filing methods, together with the improvements to RENTA WEB, have contributed to an acceleration of tax returns filed in the first section of the campaign. Thus, by the time branch assistance opened, on 14 May, 574,000 more taxpayers had already filed their tax return than last year at the same date.

Of this increase, 236,000 were taxpayers who, in the previous campaign, waited to receive in-branch assistance, but who decided to use one of the various remote filing methods to speed up the process and to avoid having to travel to physical Tax Agency branches.
