DIVA digital stamp for travellers
Find out about the requirements and procedure for recovering the VAT paid using the electronic refund document.
You will have the right to a VAT refund for purchases you make in Spain, if:
- You have your habitual residence outside the European Union (or in the Canary Islands, Ceuta or Melilla),
- Your purchases do not constitute commercial expeditions
- and you leave the EU within three months of acquiring it.
In Spain, the entire process of refunding VAT to travelers is digital, through the DIVA system of the Tax Agency.
For this reason, it is important that, when making your purchases, you ask the seller for the electronic form Tax Free (called "“electronic reimbursement document” in Spain, or by its abbreviations ERD). In order for the store to be able to give it to you, you must provide your identification data (mainly, full name, date of birth and passport number or other identification document).
When leaving our country and always before checking in your luggage at the port or airport, you must electronically validate the electronic reimbursement documents for your purchases. To do this, go to the kiosks duly marked for this purpose or to the stamping offices of Tax Free.
Remember to also bring with you:
- Your passport
- The goods for which you request a refund
- Your boarding pass or airline ticket with your travel itinerary
This is a completely digital process, so you will not receive any physical document with the validation result. However, the process is completely transparent for you, and you can check the status of the process at any time by consulting the CSV number (secure verification code) that appears in the DER, in the procedures on this page.
Once the electronic validation process of the DER has been carried out, you can now request your money from your company. Tax Free located in the boarding area (subject to commission) or directly through the store where you made the purchases.
