What is the ATA carnet used for?
The ATA carnet is an international customs document regulated by the Convention on Temporary Importation, done in Istanbul on June 26, 1990, and by the ATA Convention done in Brussels on December 6, 1961, which can be used as a transit document for the movement of goods through or within the customs territory of the Union, and as an application for authorization of temporary importation for goods and uses contemplated in the Convention under which it is issued.
ATA carnets are issued by the International Chamber of Commerce Office to the international guarantor associations of the Contracting Parties (usually the chambers of commerce).
Each notebook is covered by a guarantee that covers the amount of import duties and other charges that may arise in the event that the merchandise is not re-exported.
