The Civil Guard and Customs Surveillance seize 1,650 packs of cigarettes at Palma de Mallorca airport

  • The merchandise, valued at 6,600 euros, was hidden inside a suitcase

August 22, 2026. Agents of the Customs Surveillance Service of the Tax Agency together with members of the Civil Guard of the Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit (UDAIFF) of the Palma airport, within the framework of the fiscal and security controls carried out in the arrivals terminal of the Palma airport have proceeded to the seizure of 1,650 packs of contraband tobacco, valued at 6,600 euros, and the preparation of the corresponding complaint for smuggling offense against a 25-year-old woman, of Greek nationality.

The events took place on August 18, when the agents were carrying out routine tax verification checks on passengers at the airport's arrival terminal.

The officers detected the passenger after she, after collecting her luggage, hurriedly began to leave the airport facilities, an attitude that aroused the suspicions of the officers.

Given this situation, Civil Guard officers, together with officers from the Customs Surveillance Service, intercepted the traveler as she tried to leave the terminal. When questioned by the agents, she responded nervously and evasively, stating that she had nothing to declare, so she was taken to the airport customs facilities for a thorough inspection of her belongings.

During the examination of the luggage using the X-ray machine and the subsequent opening of the suitcase, the agents located 1,650 packs of cigarettes inside, which lacked the legally established tax seals.

Once the inspection was completed, the agents proceeded to seize all of the merchandise and to draw up the corresponding complaint for smuggling offense, which can entail fines of up to three times the value of the seized tobacco. All of the seized tobacco was deposited in the Customs facilities at Palma airport.

These actions are part of the preventive plans that both the Civil Guard and the Customs Surveillance Service maintain active in the Balearic Islands.
