July 23, 2026. Officials from the Bizkaia Operational Unit of Customs Surveillance of the Tax Agency, in a joint operation with agents of the National Police and the Ertzaintza, have dismantled an 'indoor' marijuana plantation hidden inside a farmhouse on the outskirts of the municipality of Fruiz (Bizkaia) where they have seized 1,600 marijuana plants and 8.5 kilos of hashish.

The investigation, led by the Civil and Instruction Section of the Court of First Instance of Gernika-Lumo, began when, on the one hand, the Bizkaia Operational Unit of Customs Surveillance detected indications that the property in Fruiz was being used for the intensive cultivation of cannabis for large-scale distribution purposes and, on the other hand, from the Ertzain-etxea of Gernika, police investigations had been initiated a few months ago around an individual with a history of drug trafficking whose presence was detected, along with another individual, in the same farmhouse located in Fruiz.

Through the police coordination procedures established by the Intelligence Center against Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO), the lines of work of the three bodies were unified, establishing a joint operation.

The investigations confirmed the existence of partitioned and soundproofed rooms inside the farmhouse, equipped as high-tech greenhouses to accelerate plant growth and hide the strong smell and noise of the ventilation systems.

During the entry and search, with judicial authorization and the presence of the lawyer of the Administration of Justice, the investigators of Customs Surveillance, National Police and Ertzaintza, proceeded to the intervention of a total of 1,602 marijuana plants in different stages of growth and flowering, as well as more than 8.5 kilos of narcotic substances and processed buds ready for distribution.

In addition to the marijuana plants and substances, technological cultivation equipment has been seized: individual lamps, ballasts with LED lamps, high-power filtration systems, fans and advanced equipment.

During the operation, the agents proceeded to arrest the main suspect and a second person involved, the latter being caught inside the plantation.

During the inspection of the vehicle used by the main suspect, another 4.4 kilos of hashish resin prepared for distribution were found inside.

Once the packages were examined, it was determined that it was a high-quality variety of marijuana, with a high value in the black markets.

The detainees were transferred by Ertzaintza officers to the headquarters of the Basque Country Police. The plants and other seized items have been deposited in official premises at the disposal of the judicial authority.
