• One passenger has been arrested for alleged smuggling and five others have been reported for administrative offenses.

• The cigarette packs were found in twelve suitcases and their total estimated value is over 60,000 euros

July 30, 2026. Customs Surveillance officials from the Tax Agency and officers from the Civil Guard's Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit (UDAIFF) at Palma Airport, as part of the fiscal and security controls carried out at the arrivals terminal of Palma Airport, carried out three operations on July 25 against the illicit trafficking of tobacco products, seizing a total of 11,387 packs inside twelve checked suitcases.

Arrest for smuggling offense (4,130 packs)

The first intervention began when agents intercepted a passenger, 26 years old and of Lithuanian nationality, once he had passed through the customs area. The traveler had landed on a flight from Uzbekistan with a stopover in Warsaw, carrying three suitcases.

The inspection uncovered 4,130 packs of cigarettes of different brands with an economic value of 19,000 euros. Having exceeded the legal limit established for the administrative infraction, he was arrested for being the alleged perpetrator of a smuggling offense.

Administrative offense (2,000 packs)

Following the previous action, a 30-year-old passenger from Warsaw was identified who attempted to leave the arrivals hall using the 'green circuit' (nothing to declare).

After being intercepted by the agents, he was taken to official Customs premises, where two suitcases were opened, revealing that they were full of tobacco.

In total, 200 cartons (2,000 packs) of different brands were counted, valued at 10,800 euros, and the corresponding complaint for administrative infringement was filed.

Administrative violations (5,257 packs)

The third action was initiated following a request for collaboration from the UDAIFF of the Madrid-Barajas airport.

With the information received, the agents located in Palma four passengers from Eastern Europe, all adults, who were traveling together from Istanbul (Turkey), and who had made a stopover in Madrid.

During the inspection of luggage in the 'X-ray' machine at the arrivals terminal, the agents detected the presence of a large number of packages and, after proceeding to open the seven suitcases they were carrying, the discovery of 5,257 packs of cigarettes from Turkey was confirmed, with a total economic value of 31,542 euros.

All of the tobacco seized in the three operations was deposited in the Customs facilities at Palma airport.

These actions are part of the preventive plans that both the Customs Surveillance Service of the Tax Agency and the Civil Guard maintain active in the Balearic Islands.
