Foods of animal origin
If you are coming from a third country with food products, it is important to check which ones you can bring in freely and which ones have restrictions.
The introduction of meat and meat products, milk and dairy products, except for products of animal origin, composite products, products derived from animal by-products, vegetables, vegetable products and other objects that form part of the personal luggage of passengers and are intended for their personal consumption or use, which will be exempt from official controls at border control posts if they belong to at least one of the following categories, is prohibited:
- The following goods provided that their combined weight does not exceed 2 kg :
- Powdered milk for infants, infant foods and special foods that are necessary for medical reasons, provided that they do not require refrigeration before opening, are branded products packaged and intended for direct sale to the final consumer and are in an intact container (unless they are being consumed)
- Pet food that is necessary for health reasons, provided that it is intended to be consumed by the pet accompanying the passenger, is long-lasting and branded, packaged and intended for direct sale to the final consumer, and is in an intact container (unless it is being consumed)
- Fresh gutted fishery products, prepared fishery products or processed fishery products, if their combined weight does not exceed 20 kg or, if it is higher than that limit, the weight of one fish
- Goods other than those referred to in letters a) and b) and other than those referred to in part 2 of Annex I to Regulation ( EU) 2019/2122, if their combined weight does not exceed 2 kg
- Fishery products from the Faroe Islands or Greenland
- Goods, other than plants for planting and fishery products, originating in the Faroe Islands or Greenland, if their combined weight does not exceed 10 kg

Did you know that viral diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, bird flu or the Ebola virus can be transmitted through animal products?
In order to protect you and the European territory from these diseases, imports of animal products contained in your luggage and personal packages are strictly controlled and must comply with the quantity thresholds set by European regulations.
Regulation ( EC ) 206/2009) establishes the quantities of the different products of animal origin that can be introduced into the customs territory of the Union in the traveler's luggage and Commission Delegated Regulation ( EU ) 2019/2122 of 10 October 2019 , completes Regulation (EU) 2017/625 as regards specific controls on the personal luggage of passengers and on small consignments of goods issued to natural persons and not intended for sale.
The restrictions contained in the regulation do not apply to shipments of products of animal origin between the 27 Member States of the EU or to products of animal origin coming from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino Switzerland and Great Britain. It shall also not apply to fishery products dispatched from the Faroe Islands.
The introduction of meat and meat products, milk and milk products from third countries is prohibited, subject to the exceptions laid down in the aforementioned Regulation
For Ceuta and Melilla and given that they are not part of the customs territory of the Union, the introduction of products of animal origin in the luggage of travelers from non-EU member countries is regulated by national regulations.
Consult, where appropriate, with the GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF PUBLIC HEALTH of the SECRETARIAT OF STATE FOR HEALTH of the MINISTRY OF HEALTH as the competent health authority in the matter or with the territorial services of Agriculture and Fisheries and Foreign Health in the Government Delegations of both Cities.
