The AEAT strengthens its maritime surveillance capabilities with new vessels within the SAATOS project.
The State Tax Administration Agency (AEAT) has significantly strengthened its maritime surveillance and anti-smuggling capabilities in the Bay of Algeciras by incorporating two new semi-rigid vessels, acquired within the framework of the European SAATOS project financed with European funds through the Anti-Fraud Program of the OLAF .
This strategic investment responds to a critical operational need: Improve the detection and control of illicit trafficking activities, especially in high-risk and difficult-to-access coastal areas. The new vessels offer greater maneuverability and rapid response capabilities, allowing the AEAT to operate more effectively in complex maritime environments.
The integration of these units fills a structural gap within the AEAT's maritime operational model, complementing existing resources and expanding the tactical scope of interventions. Their presence has also strengthened the deterrent effect, with a visible impact on disrupting smuggling attempts.
In a broader context, the SAATOS project contributes to the European Union's fight against illicit tobacco trade by supporting external border control and the implementation of Directive 2014/40/ EU on the traceability of tobacco products.
