European funding for non-intrusive inspection equipment and laboratories under the CCEI's 2023-2024 programme

The Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) continues to strengthen its customs control capabilities with new non-intrusive inspection technologies and advanced analysis.

The Department of Customs and Special Taxes (DAIIEE) continues to advance its strategy of modernizing customs control systems by incorporating new technological capabilities, in line with the European Union's objectives of strengthening security at external borders and facilitating legitimate trade.

In this context, the AEAT has promoted new actions within the framework of the European Commission's Customs Control Teams Instrument (CCEI), aimed at strengthening the efficiency, mobility and operational capacity of controls.

Progress towards an integrated control system: inspection and analysis

The AEAT continues to make progress in improving its analytical capabilities by strengthening its network of laboratories. This line of action complements the deployment of non-intrusive inspection technologies, allowing a more comprehensive approach to customs control that combines detection, analysis and verification.

Integrating these capabilities helps improve the quality of controls, optimize risk management, and strengthen the ability to respond to new types of fraud and illicit trafficking.

Strengthening non-intrusive inspection and evolution of the operating model

Among the actions carried out, the incorporation of a new manual backscattering equipment in the Balearic Islands Regional Office stands out, which will allow for improved verification of goods and vehicles without the need to resort to invasive procedures.

These systems facilitate the inspection of hidden or hard-to-reach compartments more quickly and accurately, reducing intervention times and optimizing the use of available resources. Its integration into existing operating environments contributes to an evolution of the control model towards more agile, selective approaches based on the use of advanced technologies.

Results and impact of the actions

The actions developed are allowing progress towards a more modern, efficient and sustainable control system, in which technology plays a key role in improving both the effectiveness and efficiency of inspections.

These initiatives reinforce the AEAT's commitment to protecting the borders of Spain and the European Union, contributing to a more coordinated, innovative customs control system adapted to current challenges.
